I don’t think The Chainsmokers have taken a single break in the last 12 months. They just dropped yet another single, a collaboration with Coldplay titled “Something Just Like This.” It’s catchy, it’s energetic, and it’s perfect for any time of the year. Do we expect anything less from The Chainsmokers at this point?

The track was kept under wraps until its live debut at the BRIT Awards Wednesday night, where Coldplay frontman Chris Martin took the stage along with The Chainsmokers to perform the new song.

The instrumentals between the chorus and the verse sound a little like the instrumental hook in “Closer,” but that can be forgiven. It’s an entirely different vibe. This one feels a little retro, a little space-age—just bigger. This wasn’t made for a club or for the radio; I hear this in stadiums. It feels anthemic, and Martin’s vocals play a huge part in that.

But the best part about this, hands down, are the piano and guitar parts. While the song soars and synths  fill most of the space, you get moments where the production backs off and there’s a bouncy, light piano melody. Or there’s a return to the soft guitar picking that started the song off. Going back to instruments like that and stripping it back, even if it’s just for a second or two, really grounds a song for me and that’s exactly what happened here. It’s so easy for a song to get lost in its own production; not this one.
