Let’s talk about the VMA winners of 2017…. actually let’s discuss the up-and-coming podcast Anything Goes hosted by the founder of the site, Justin Leger, and this squid (me) first, then discuss Kanye cucking Taylor Swift.

If someone asked me to describe the style of our Anything Goes podcast, I would say that it is the world’s most random podcast. We discuss everything under the sun. Sometimes we’re funny, other times we’re serious, but all the time we’re just two 24 years old assholes trying to make it in the world.  While it’s the world’s most random podcast, one thing is for sure, we do not discriminate against music. We talk about music every single week (Wednesdays) and most recently Justin and I have accurately (eh) looked into our crystal ball and predicted the 2017 Video Music Awards or VMAs as the kids would say.

Let’s cut to the chase. By the way, I’m not doing predictions as to who I think will win the VMAs because I don’t care what they think. This article is about who we WANT to win.

Video Of The Year

  • “Humble” – Kendrick Lamar

  • “24 K” Magic – Bruno Mars

  • “Scars To Your Beautiful” – Alessia Cara

  • “Wild Thoughts” – DJ Khaled, Rihanna, Bryson Tiller

  • “Reminder” – The Weeknd

Salim’s Favorite: Humble – Kendrick.

I truly went into the year thinking that 2017 was the year of Harry Styles and Drake. That is not a joke, I’ve been very adamant on past episodes that I thought Harry Styles would be a rock star. It turns out that summer is the summer of Calvin Harris and 2017 is the year of Kendrick Lamar (and The Weeknd). ‘Humble’ was trippy while other videos, especially Alessia Cara, were vanilla videos….hard pass

Justin’s Favorite: Humble – Kendrick Lamar

None of the other videos stood out to me at all. Kendrick Lamar’s video for Humble looked like it actually took a ton of time and creativity. For that, it gets my vote.

Artist Of The Year

  • Bruno Mars
  • Kendrick Lamar
  • Ed Sheeran
  • Ariana Grande
  • The Weeknd
  • Lorde

Salim’s Favorite: The Weeknd.

I feel like The Weeknd’s album was more 2016 but I never get how award shows do things. Seriously, I fundamentally don’t understand where the cutoff date is for award shows. “Starboy” was a fire album but the VMAs will probably pick Ed Sheeran.

Justin’s Favorite: The Weeknd.

Literally agree with every word of what Salim said.

Best New Artist

  • Khalid
  • Kodak Black
  • SZA
  • Young M.A
  • Julia Michaels
  • Noah Cyrus

Salim’s Favorite: Khalid.

SZA is no joke but I can give you three reasons why Khalid wins best new artist.

  1. Young Dumb and Broke
  2. 8TEEN
  3. American Teen

Justin’s Favorite: Khalid.

It’s scaring me how much I’ve agree with Salim so far. This never happens. That being said, Khalid is great and I’m not crazy about the other options.

Best Collaboration

  • “We Don’t Talk Anymore” – Charlie Puth ft. Selena Gomez
  • “Wild Thoughts” – DJ Khaled, Rihanna, & Bryson Tiller
  • “Broccoli” – D.R.A.M ft. Lil Yachty
  • “Closer” – The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey
  • “Feels” – Calvin Harris ft. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, & Big Sean
  • “I Don’t Want To Live Forever” – Zayn & Taylor Swift

Salim’s Favorite: Closer

This was such a hard category to pick form. I LOVE “Feels” and “I Don’t Want To Live Forever” but let’s call a spade a spade here. “Closer” took over my life for more months than I want to admit. Plus, Halsey can get it.

Justin’s Favorite: Closer

OK now this is getting weird. We agree again. Closer has to run away with this one.

Best Pop Song

  • “Treat You Better” – Shawn Mendes
  • “Shape Of You” – Ed Sheeran
  • “Sign Of The Times” – Harry Styles
  • ” Down” – Fifth Harmony ft. Gucci Mane
  • “Chained To The Rhythm” – Katy Perry ft. Skip Marley
  • “Malibu” – Miley Cyrus

Salim’s Favorite: Shape Of You

I wan’t to pick “Sign Of The Times” so bad but I would be a fraud and this blog would be CNN. As much as I hate Ed Sheeran as a human, he is a hell of a musician.

Justin’s Favorite: Shape Of You

Fun fact: I’m completely over every song on the list. However, gun to head I have to go with Shape Of You.

Best Hip Hop Song

  • “Humble” – Kendrick Lamar
  • “Bounce Back” – Big Sean
  • “Same Drugs” – Chance The Rapper
  • ” Broccoli” – D.R.A.M ft. Lil Yachty
  • “Bad & Boujee” – Migos ft. Lil Uzi Vert
  • “I’m The One” – DJ Khaled ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance, Lil Wayne

Salim’s Favorite: Same Drugs

There is a 28% chance this song wins the VMA. There are at least three songs that are more popular ahead of it. Doesn’t really matter to me, “Same Drugs” is not only my favorite song off of Chance 3 but one of my favorite songs in the past year.

Justin’s Favorite: Humble

There it is, me and Salim’s first disagreement on the list. It’s no surprise, as any ‘Anything Goes’ listener knows by now that Chance’s pee pee is fully in Salim’s mouth at this point. Humble it is.

Best Dance Song

  • “Stay” – Zedd & Alessia Cara
  • “I’t Ain’t Me” – Kygo x Selena
  • “My Way” – Calvin Harris
  • “Cold Water” – Bieber
  • “Gone” – Afrojack

Salim’s Favorite: Cold Water

I have to go with my guy Biebs. Every song on here is awesome and while I think “My Way” will win, last summer was the summer of the Biebs. People need to keep remembering that.

Justin’s Favorite: It Ain’t Me.

Still an absolute jam and a half. Plus, “Cold Water” isn’t even on par with the Bieber song that came out along with it, “Let Me Love You”. Give me Selena in more ways than one.

Best Rock Song

I’m not a rock guy so listen to this week’s episode to see a few ‘guesstimates.’

Best Fight Against The System Song

Nah, I’m going to stay fully clear away from this topic.

Side Note: While I am sucking music’s metaphorical penis right now I might as well keep going. Please check out our 2017 Anything Goes Spotify Playlist below. The Apple Music playlist will come soon enough.
