UPDATE: Alex Cora is officially the new Red Sox manager.

ORIGINAL STORY: Alex Cora is expected to be announced as new manager of the Boston Red Sox once the Houston Astros’ season concludes.

Cora, currently serving as Houston’s bench coach, was reportedly offered a three-year deal by Boston. He also interviewed for the Mets job and the Nationals are expected to make a last-ditch effort to interview him after unexpectedly firing Dusty Baker.

When I speculated who might take over for Farrell, I had Cora as my top candidate. I wasn’t alone with that pick. He’s as smart as they come when it comes to the ins and outs of baseball and all signs point to him being a far better in-game manager than Farrell ever was. However, this will be his first stint as a full-time manager at any professional level.

We’ll update with details as soon as they become available.
